Let Me Be Your Shamen
Killer Psychedelic Trance Mix

My set from this week is still untitled. It must be a bit early for the creative juices to be flowing.

Some weeks when I go looking for music, it seems like I have to listen to 100 tracks to find 1 or 2 good ones, but this week it seems like everything I listened to was brilliant! What started off as a tribute to Mekkanikka (who will be playing live at Organix (Club 23 West) in Vancouver next Friday, soon grew to include new music from Laughing Buddha, a new artist I’d never heard of before named Triptych, new tracks from TIP World and another new group named Mesmerizer. This week’s set is VERY psychedelic.

For the second half of the show, Caddyshack brought out some updated Union Jack sounds (a personal fave) as well as some mashed up classics. I could admit I didn’t write down his setlist because I was chatting with our studio guest, Jay (really glad you came by!), but it’s way more fun to just say Caddyshack’s set is top secret – like back in the day when DJs would be pretty reluctant to tell you what tracks they were playing ;)

Fusion Psytrance Mix

This week was as indecisive as I’ve been in a long time! I’ve got ideas percolating for a classic anthem set, and olskool rave set and a Top 10 Eve Records set – and I just couldn’t decide what to play right up until the show started this week.

Good friend Morgan from the Spirit Circle dropped by this week too, although he somehow managed to duck out at just the right time to avoid being on air! I found out that Morgan got turned on to electronic dance music the same way I did, by listening to CiTR back in the early 90s when shows like Homebass with DJ Noah, Synaptic Sandwhich with DJ Cyber and, drum roll please… Digital Alarm Chronometer with DJ Vadar were ruling the airwaves! Little did Morgan know, I became a regular fixture on Digital Alarm Chronometer starting in about 1994!

Mad Maxx Fullon Psytrance Tribute

Mad Maxx played at Organix on Friday and after looking through some of my recent podcasts, I was surprised that I hadn’t played more Mad Maxx given that I have quite a few of his tracks and generally love his stuff. This week I picked up a few newer Mad Maxx tracks, dug up some of his older stuff and put together a Full On Psytrance set that hopefully does him proud. Still a long way off from the live set he delivered on Friday, but Max sets the bar pretty high as a long-time leading name in hard psychedelic trance.

Steve Kreuger Eclectic Mix

I always have the hardest time describing other people’s sets as the connection to the music isn’t quite as intimate. And Steve plays such an eclectic mix that I’m not always sure how to classify it. Some of it is a little housey, some of it is trancey and some of it seems almost a bit technoey. (Spell check is giving me a hard time there, but I think you get what I mean.) If you really want to know what I’m talking about, give Steve’s set a listen and then let me know how you would classify the style.

The UBC Homecoming Rave Mix

I couldn’t wait for this week’s show after being forced to take last week off! You guys have been asking for a fix of dark psytrance and this week’s set delivers. As usual it’s mixed with a fairly deep and twisted selection of fullon psy. I also discovered a great EP by Planewalker titled Psychic Evolution, which is available for free download at Ektoplasm. It’s a killer mix of breakbeat and psychedelic trance which seems to be shaping a relatively new sub-genre called psybreaks. While still a relatively young sub-sub-genre of trance, I could see more artists like Planewalker and Dapanji creating a pretty popular fusion between the already popular psytrance and breakbeat sub-genres.

Caddyshack drops some new tracks in his set this week too, including a new Nick Sentience remix of Edison Factor and a killer Organ Donors remix of Adapter by Scott Attrill. Another track worth mentioning for Hard Acid Trance fans is Andy Farley & Base Graffiti – No More. Base Graffiti is one of those names I don’t see too often, but it always catches my attention when one of their tracks get’s played.

Love Parade Mix
A Moment of Psy-lence for the 2010 Love Parade Tragedy

This week’s show is dedicated to the friends and families of the 19 people who were trampled to death at the 2010 Love Parade in Germany.

Is it possible to to be deep and fullon at the same time? I tend to think of them as somewhat opposite, but this week’s show really seems to bridge the gap. Two new tracks worth mentioning are Black Jack by Mekkanikka and Nu Metro by Broken Toy.

I couldn’t get the second half of the Simon Qudos guest mix working, so the second half of the show features a BBC essential mix by Christopher Lawrence from 2004. Watch for the second half of my Simon Qudos guest mix in the coming weeks!
